THE family of a young Irish tourist whose body was found in the Yarra River have thanked Melbourne for its kindness during the search for him.
Police are awaiting autopsy results after Stephen King's body was found in murky water at Docklands.
Amid the family's sorrow, his brother Seamus yesterday acknowledged the public concern for his family.
'We've spent the day on the phone talking to our family in Ireland and obviously our parents are devastated,' Seamus said.
'But we have been heartened and are grateful to so many strangers and friends in Melbourne who have been helping us through this ordeal.'
Melbourne's close-knit Irish community gathered yesterday to mourn Mr King's death.
Despite a fortnight of frantic searching, the 27-year-old's body was finally found within sight of hundreds of high-rise city flats boasting panoramic views over Docklands.
Police found cash, his flat keys and his mobile phone on him.
The tiler and bricklayer was reported missing a fortnight ago, just hours after telling friends he was heading to Crown casino.
He had been in high spirits after leaving his mates at a Southgate pub to test the luck of the Irish with a few hands of poker.
An experienced traveller, he had been in Australia just three weeks into a year-long working holiday.
Dozens of Irish volunteers helped search the streets and lobby police and politicians to step up the search for their missing friend.
Seamus and another brother, Peter, flew in from Ireland last Monday to appeal to the public for information.
Cousin Sean Smith left his girlfriend on holiday in Thailand to help look for Mr King.
Last week they met Lord Mayor John So, who had pledged council ground crews would keep an eye out for the missing tourist.
Peter King, 30, said the family loved Australia, were all well-travelled and had not envisaged any problems for Stephen in Melbourne.
'We can't believe the kindness we have been shown by so many people who have expressed concern for Stephen,' he said.
Stephen, described as a happy-go-lucky, friendly young man shared a flat in St Kilda with his boss and childhood mate Joe McQuade, who was among the last to see him alive after a drinking session at P J O'Brien's pub in Southbank.
The King family is yet to finalise plans for the return of Stephen's body to his homeland.
Anyone who saw him after 3.10am on Saturday, July 19, can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
